The Quarter Size Test

When a rock kicks up on the freeway and leaves a mark on your windshield, the first question is simple: how big is it. A chip smaller than a quarter, whether it is a bullseye, a star break, or a short partial crack, can usually be filled and sealed the same day. We do these as walk-ins, no appointment needed, and the whole thing takes about thirty minutes. You wait in the lobby, we call your name, and you drive off with the chip stopped in its tracks before it ever becomes anything bigger.

The Six Inch Rule

Length changes the math. A crack under six inches can sometimes still be repaired if it has not spread across the glass, but once a crack runs past six inches, repair stops being a real option. At that length the windshield's structural integrity is already compromised, and a resin fill will not hold the glass together the way it needs to. That is a replacement job, not a repair job, and we will tell you straight if that is what you are looking at rather than sell you a fix that will not last.

The Line You Can't Drive Around

Location matters as much as size. A small chip sitting low near the edge of the glass is often a simple fix. The same chip sitting directly in your line of sight behind the steering wheel is a different problem. Even a clean repair can leave a faint distortion, and California does not allow you to drive with damage sitting in the driver's critical viewing area. If the mark is where your eyes actually look when you drive, we are going to recommend replacement, because a slightly blurry patch in front of your face is not something you want at freeway speed.

What Waiting Actually Costs You

A chip does not stay a chip. Heat from the sun, cold from the air conditioning, a pothole, or a run through the car wash can be enough to send a hairline crack running across the whole windshield overnight. We see it all the time: someone has a small chip that was fully covered at no cost through their comprehensive insurance, puts off calling for a few weeks, and comes back with a crack that now needs a full replacement instead of a thirty minute repair. The repair would have been free. The wait was not.

How the Repair Actually Works

If your damage qualifies for repair, walk in during business hours at either of our El Cajon locations and we will look at it on the spot, no appointment needed. Most comprehensive insurance policies cover chip repair at no out of pocket cost to you, so bring your insurance card and we will handle the claim directly. If you are paying out of pocket, repair starts at $35.99. Either way, plan on being back in your car within half an hour.

If It's Already a Crack

Once you are past repair territory, the good news is that replacement is fast. We stock OEM equivalent glass from PGW, Carlite, FYG, Carlex and Pilkington, so the right windshield for your car is usually already on the shelf, not on order. Most installs run sixty to ninety minutes, and with DOW and Sika certified urethane you are back to drive away strength in about an hour. If your car has a forward facing camera mounted behind the mirror, we handle the ADAS recalibration as part of the same visit, so there is no separate trip to the dealer. Every windshield we install carries a lifetime workmanship warranty, and we file directly with your insurance company so you are not stuck on hold explaining the difference between a chip and a crack yourself.
