How an Auto Glass Insurance Claim Actually Works in California

The Short Version

If you carry comprehensive coverage, windshield replacement typically costs you nothing out of pocket. Rock chip repair is often free through insurance too, since insurers would rather pay for a thirty minute repair than a full replacement down the line. That is the whole reason comprehensive glass coverage exists.

No, Your Rate Will Not Go Up

This is the question we get asked the most, and the answer is straightforward: California law does not allow an insurer to raise your premium because of a single comprehensive glass claim. A cracked windshield is treated as something that happened to your car, not something you did, and it is priced that way.

You Don't Have to Call Your Insurance First

You do not need to phone your insurance company before you come see us. Bring your insurance card and a photo ID, and we will handle filing the claim directly with your carrier. We work with GEICO, State Farm, Progressive, AAA, and most other major insurers on a regular basis, so the paperwork side is something we do every day, not something you need to figure out yourself. Whether it turns into a rock chip repair or a full windshield replacement, we start the claim the same visit you show up, so you are not making a second trip just to hand over paperwork.

Where to Bring Your Car

We run two shops in El Cajon. Main Street, at 1189 E Main St #5, is open Monday through Saturday from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Broadway, at 944 Broadway Ave, opens a little later at 8:30 AM and closes at the same 5:30 PM, also Monday through Saturday. Both are closed Sunday. Either location can start your claim, and walk-ins are welcome at both for most services.

A Business Built on Repeat Customers

We have been filing these claims since 2001, and the same family that started the business is still running it today. A lot of our customers come back a second and third time, or send a family member in, which is where a 97 percent referral rate actually comes from. That kind of repeat business only happens if the claim gets handled correctly and the glass is right the first time, so that is what we treat every insurance job as, not a one-time transaction.

Discounts Worth Asking About

Outside of insurance, we also offer senior discounts along with discounts for active duty, veteran, and retired military, and we keep a standing pledge to the Wounded Warriors Project. None of these affect how your insurance claim is handled, but they are worth mentioning at the counter if any of them apply to you.

The Shop Is Your Choice, Not Theirs

Insurance companies often mention a preferred network shop when you file a claim. That is a suggestion, not a requirement. California law gives you the legal right to choose any licensed auto glass shop you want, regardless of who your insurer recommends. Your coverage pays the same either way. Choosing where your car gets fixed is your call, and if you have been a customer here before, that history is often the whole reason people come back to us instead of the shop their insurer named on the phone.

What to Bring

  • Your insurance card
  • A photo ID
  • Your vehicle information, if you have it handy
  • Nothing else, we handle the claim paperwork from here

Paying Out of Pocket

Not every job goes through insurance, and that is fine too. Rock chip repair without insurance starts at $35.99. For windshield replacement or any other glass work paid out of pocket, give us a call or stop by with your vehicle details and we will get you a straight number before any work starts, no surprises on the invoice.

What Happens After the Glass Is In

Once the claim is filed and the work is done, that is not the end of it as far as we are concerned. Every windshield we install carries a lifetime workmanship warranty, whether insurance paid for it or you did. If something ever comes up with the seal, the fit, or the work itself, that warranty does not have an expiration date, and you do not need to reopen a claim with your insurer to get it looked at. Come back to either location and we will make it right.
